Both run the latest Windows This suddenly started happening:. When I connect onto my desktop, I maximize the Remote Connection window. Good suggestion, but a problem re the bug: This evening, about five days after the symptom began, I realized that the problem is no longer there!

I went to my question to post an update, and saw your reply asking for a screenshot. So I have to back off and put this on hold. I have no idea how to trigger this behavior, so I'll just as have to wait. If and when it reoccurs, I will get a screenshot and append it to my question.

I figure three:. When a remote desktop connection is made from a Windows 10 computer, the resulting RDP screen shows the remote but with the local taskbar.

For instance, when I connect to one of our Windows servers, I see the server screen but with my Win10 taskbar. I have a few questions I'm hoping someone can answer:. The way the blog post is worded, it's not clear whether the 'new' part of this is strictly related to biometrics, or if using Windows Hello to log into a remote desktop server is completely new.

If so, is there any documentation on this available? In the example used in the blog post, the Remote Desktop connection is from a Windows 10 client to a Windows Server server. Is Server required, or will this work with older server OS versions?

I've tried using this feature in my environment, to connect from a client running build to a Server server, but get an error "The client certificate does not contain a valid UPN. View best response. This only pertains to certificate trust deployments and biometrics.

I would love to go password-less, but it seems there is still some refinement required. The changes in add support for biometric auth in addition to PIN. If it was resolved, and key-trust worked with RDP, I would be chugging margaritas and dancing on tables. Sadly it still hasn't been fixed, and there is still little information available.

I'm engaging Microsoft under our Unified Support to better understand what's happening in this space. I was fuzzy too as it seemed no RA was required for the key trust model. Regardless, based on all these comments, the idea that I might be able to get away with the key-trust model seems to be out the window especially since we have a brand new requirement to deploy a single new RDP based PAW Privileged Access Workstation that should only be accessed with WHfB credentials.

Users using earlier versions of Windows 10 could remote desktop to using Windows Hello for Business but were limited to the using their PIN as their authentication gesture.

Windows 10, version introduces the ability for users to authenticate to a remote desktop session using their Windows Hello for Business biometric gesture. The feature is on by default, so your users can take advantage of it as soon as they upgrade to Windows 10, version Windows generates and stores cryptographic keys using a software component called a key storage provider KSP.

Windows requests a certificate based on the key pair from your enterprises issuing certificate authority, which returns a certificate that is stored in the user's Personal certificate store. The private key remains on the smart card and the public key is stored with the certificate. Metadata on the certificate and the key store the key storage provider used to create the key remember the certificate contains the public key.

This same concept applies to Windows Hello for Business. The certificate APIs hide this complexity. When an application uses a certificate, the certificate APIs locate the keys using the saved key storage provider. The key storage providers directs the certificate APIs on which provider they use to find the private key associated with the certificate.

This is how Windows knows you have a smart card certificate without the smart card inserted and prompts you to insert the smart card.

Windows Hello for Business emulates a smart card for application compatibility. Versions of Windows 10 prior to versionwould redirect private key access for Windows Hello for Business certificate to use its emulated smart card using the Microsoft Smart Card KSP, which would enable the user to provide their PIN.

Users appreciate convenience of biometrics and administrators value the security however, you may experience compatibility issues with your applications and Windows Hello for Business certificates.
